From an emergent India and the first Western Yogi to Decolonising Yoga and #Metoo
2-hour course with Adriana Maldonado
Are you passionate about yoga but you are not sure where it comes from and how it developed?
In this course Adriana will take you through the history of Modern Postural Yoga, from its origins towards the end of the 19th century to the multimillion-dollar global industry that represents today. Adriana will unfold the development of yoga in its modern version, considering the main historical points that mark and shape it, the different philosophical premises that were integrated to the physical practice, the main figures and gurus that are responsible for the spread of yoga in India and the world, the practices, spiritual understandings, and the different styles that emerge, and the main issues that yoga and its practitioners have been facing as this phenomenon becomes more and more popular.
This course is open to anyone who is curious about yoga, but it does not involve any yoga practice.
Enhance your experience of yoga integrating philosophy into your yoga practice.
A workshop with Adriana Maldonado
12th March 2022, 1-3PM
3Tribes Studio 2
Adriana holds an MA in Traditions of Yoga and Meditation. She has been teaching Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga since 2015 and she is a practitioner since 2006
Yoga is much more than a physical practice; it has a transformative nature that brings the mind to stillness in order to fully experience the body, the breath and to discover the Self. Experiencing stillness of mind is key to transformation. But why do we want to be transformed and into what?
Life throws us challenges that create moments of stress and anxiety, and sometimes more serious mental health challenges. Work, deadlines, finance issues, loneliness, these, and many more can all affect our mental health. Yoga is an effective tool to cope with these issues and to stretch moments of contentment and even, to touch happiness by accessing deep states of consciousness.
Yoga has been evolving for over two millennia. It was taken, shaped, transformed, and diversified into many different beliefs and practices, by different groups and cultures. It is only in the last 100 years or so that it has taken a very physical form, where ancient teachings of philosophy and meditation are mixed with more athletic and dynamic exercises and breathing techniques. The results of such mixture, with practice and over time, are generally the feelings of transformation into a better being. These results do not stop there, Yoga can also positively affect our relationships, our performance at work or school, sports or on any activity we do.
This workshop will help you understand and experience through mind and body the main philosophical aspects of yoga as well as techniques of concentration while on the move, or in stillness, through your vinyasa and breath practice.
The first 45 minutes of the workshop will look into the main historical marks and identify where these philosophical points were developed; particularly we speak of the Yoga Sutras, Buddhist influences, Tantra, and Haṭhayoga. Adriana will teach you the main yoga techniques that are found within these sources and how these serve as the philosophical base for the building of Modern Postural Yoga, particularly touching on Vinyasa. She will expand on the key figures of yoga in the West such as Krishnamacharya, Iyengar, Sivananda, Pattabhi Jois and Vanda Scaravelli.
During the next 45 minutes Adriana will guide a Vinyasa Yoga practice where you will be able to identify and practice the elements explored in the first part of the workshop.
In the final 15 minutes Adriana will guide you through a pranayama practice and brief meditation. The session will close with Q&A.
